Rethinking small toolbar filter interaction with file list

I propose making the small toolbar filter subordinate, secondary to the settings' file list.
While in v.1.9, it acts more like an override. The suggestion is for it to be more of a filter.
Ex.
All = All files chosen in file list.
Images = Only images after file list is applied. (Ditto for videos, archives, sounds)
Override = A single unfiltered equivalent to current "all" override.
Advantages:
- It would encourage use of file list.
- No ambiguous custom item.
Thoughts?

Yes the current filter is not so good...
And if i remove 'visible' column of option/Filelist, and use checkbox directly in filter menu (Image, Audio, Video, ...)??

So moving visible column to filter. Yes, that is direct and perfect? Maybe "[x]Invert selection" could go with that- as a quick look to see what is missing from list (such as broken jpeg, and others).

Something like that:

You choose directly in the popup menu which items do you want to see...

Yes

Not ! Customised /customized, should remain a priority

Default
- All others files !
Yes, if no influence/actions directly or indirectly DB (caps)! Unwanted files, DB weight, other ... How to be sure
Invert selection" could go with that- as a quick look to see what is missing from list (such as broken jpeg, and others).
See, for example, the options for recording metadata

I've always been afraid to change this option because of this
-I would say that any changes to the tool "Filter" (so be outside of the options set in the window "Settings / file list") should automatically block all possible entry in the lower data even if exclusion / Inclusion in many cases been set!
-The tool "Filter" to allow a search or facilitate the movement and viewing (XNV undeniable quality of) the entire folder tree of the PC and allows the application of different tools available if needed XNV !

??? If you click on the filter, you activate/desactivate it

Perhaps a shorter menu would be better. That one is rather long (=inconvenient to use).
As in many other aspects of MP, the filter UI would benefit from rethought/redesign.
First thing would be support multiple named user filters instead of the inconvenient and confusing "Custom" filter.
One UI approach that is appealing would be for the user to right-click on a column in the sort header to display a context panel with which to select various filter values (the way Explorer does it in Vista and Win 7, or Excel in "Filter" mode). This is a tried and true UI design that works well.

You misunderstood me.

What I meant is the ability for the filter to switch into the opposite. E.g. if I select "Excellent" and "Videos", by default only matched files get shown. But it would be also nice to have an option, all
other files get shown by hiding the matching files.

Sometimes that is called "Invert".

Ah, ok, even nicer - so only one menu entry would be needed ("Invert Filter" on/off).
JohnFredC wrote:Perhaps a shorter menu would be better. That one is rather long (=inconvenient to use).
Yes, the filters menu could take use of sub menus.
File Types --> Images, Audio, Video, ...
Ratings --> Excellent, Good, ...
Priority --> Important, Work, ...
etc
Possibly the File Types should stay in the root menu if this get implementated, as they are the most used filter types for sure.

With Pierre's proposal I'm not sure it should be called a filter. A new icon for 'file list' with only those items would let the user know that significant changes would be expected. I think it is important for file management at lowest level not to be confused with more temporary organizing features (like the rating, metadata, search as has been mentioned).

One item to use often. The others more established. That is what I would like to see in any case.
