XnView Software

- Observed that in XnView text files can be viewed. The setting is View>Preview>Show Text file

- As for copying the image location, it used to be available in 1.61, but with 1.66 it is history.

- Also noticed that for some reason I cannot use Windows Paint to set a pic as a wallpaper. Could that be connected to the new XnV. ?

You're right, there used to be "Edit->Copy file(s) location" which copied the full filenames of all files selected to the clipboard. Not sure why this feature has been removed. Though I've never used it myself and do not miss it. Did you or other people use this feature?

I didn't even know that MS Paint can set the wallpaper. Must be a newer version of MS Paint. Setting the wallpaper in XnView might have impact on other programs setting the wallpaper, but I'm just guessing here, Pierre should know more about this.

Well, after I posted the message I experimented around and it seems as though you can only set to wallpaper in Paint if the artwork originated from there.

I think that every file manager should have that feature. I think that feature should come back (although I never used it because never known that it exists).

In XnView there is a feature "Tools->Generate Files Listing" to generate a listing of the selected files. The list is opened in default Text editor.
Currently, this feature is not very flexible. In the French newsgroup there was a discussion on this feature and crazytb and I have made proposals in English, see Générer une liste de fichiers. There could be two radio buttons:
( ) Copy list to clipboard
( ) Open list in Editor"

So wouldn't it be sufficient if the "Generate Files Listing" feature was improved?

Sometimes I want a quick and dirty way to copy the image location, to allow us to, let's say, paste the full path in a photo editor. I think your suggestions are good to Filelist feature, but "Copy file location" should be an independent feature. The first one is made to allow us to generate filelists with a lot of options. The second copies the full filepath in the format needed by any shell or "open dialog".

A good workaround until/if it is brought back, at least for Win98 users is to open a DOS prompt window then drag the file onto the window, the full 8.3 file path will be displayed, or you can tweak that by:

DIR /v (then drag the file to the window, then click enter)

The full path plus extraneous info will be listed which you can edit out. Or if you want hard copy for a whole directory with the file path:

DIR (then drag the file to the window) /s/v *.* >>C:\filelist.txt (click enter)

While I have used the file listing before, the drawback is that it only gives the files and not the file path, though I suppose one could copy paste the file path from the address bar.

It's good to hear that this feature is still available. But I think that functionality is too hidden. Couldn't we have the old menu item "Copy image(s) locations" for this? The experienced user could use Ctrl+C, the novice user will be happy to see and have a menu item.
