There is currently no way to save an animated image.

I believe the original reason was the issue with GIF patents, though between the patens expiring & formats like APNG, such is no longer an issue.

There might be some technical reason for it, but since most animated images are just multipage files with extra data like framerate & loop count, and xnview can already create multipage files in formats like TIFF and PDF, that seems unlikely.

That is very sad to hear.
I was looking for a possibility to create an animated gif/png and thought it could be done with XnView.

First I looked "Tools->Sequence convert...", then I thought ok, let's create a "Multipage file" and save it as animated gif/png...

After a little search I found the nconvert description:
It has the features :
* Import about 400 graphic file formats
* Export about 40 graphic file formats
* Multipage TIFF, Animated GIF, Animated ICO support
*
So there IS a possiblity??
But how?

Hmm... intriguing.... I've never looked into the nconvert prog much (since between batch processing & sequence convert (still don't know what the diff is there/whjy there are 2 seperate options), xnview proper can do pretty much everything nconvert can & more). Xnview itself has no option for any animated format under the create multipage file option, so it's very weird that nconvert would have such an ability.

edit: Upon further research, it looks like that info only means that nconvert can only IMport those animated formats, not EXport them.

Here are some old threads about converting/resizing/etc gifs, they might be useful to you:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=3063

A couple alternate freeware progs which can create animated gifs are:
http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/
http://vdubapngmod.sourceforge.net/

Unfreeze can't edit at all, it merely creates an animated gif from a bunch of still images.
VirtualDub can edit to a certain extent, but is designed to make animated images from video clips as opposed to a series of still images. To save an animated gif in vdub, go file->export.
