IPTC/EXIF not behaving "properly"

Hello,
I'm working with XnView 1.97.4, updating IPTC captions to prepare for an upload to a ResourceSpace-based image archive.
I have noticed that most images, when imported into ResourceSpace, had a duplicate caption, as in "[caption],[caption]"; furthermore, image orientation was also off (landscape instead of portrait).
What I have noticed, is that by running the image through Photoshop and resaving it, these import problems disappeared. So now I'm running a batch "Image Processor" script on the image folder prior to importing, but it's not very convenient.
We've had similar problems with photos that had captions that appeared in Photoshop, but not in XnView.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is there a fix in sight?
Many thanks in advance!
