I have a new windows 7 notebook. I am using XnView version 1.97.6

I have been using XnView Describe capability to identify the various types of aircraft pictures I have taken (i.e. B-25 Mitchell Nickname Maid In the Shade).

After entering about 75 descriptions within the same folder, I lost all the descriptive data that I had entered. Started over and after entering around 10 descriptions I found the descriptions had disappeared again. I then deleted the descript.ion file from the folder and started again. I successfully added around 150 descriptions without any lost data (there are 329 jpg images in this folder). Then for some reason either I or windows 7 appears to do something to corrupt the descript.ion file and the description are lost.

It's time consuming to enter all this data and lose it. It is my great hope that you can help with a resolution to this issue.

I'm sorry, but I can't seem to figure out how to attach files. Do I have the proper permissions?

I have come to believe my subject title 'Corrupt descript.ion file' was not correct! What I am now seeing is that for reasons unknown to me, windows 7 or XnView is creating a *.bak file for an image. It appears that when more than one *.bak files is created the descript.ion file reverts back to a 2KB file size. For, example let's say I have grown the descript.ion file to 8KB by adding descriptions, when a *.bak file(s) is created the file size drops back to a 2KB file.

I can't say with certainty that what follows was responsible for creating a *.bak file, but I believe it may be one reason for the creation of a bak file and an 'empty" 2KB descript.ion file. At one point I had selected multiple files. I zoomed in on the last file selected (to get addition info off the image), then right clicked on the thumbnail, selected 'Describe' and added the descriptive information, then clicked on 'Write all selected'. It is at this point 'I think' that the bak file was created and the descript.ion reverted back to a 'empty' 2KB file size.

I do have a descript.ion file that reverted back to 2KB and I can also provide you with a *.bak file. If you can help me with attaching the files I will gladly ship them to you.

If you have .bak, you use 'lossless rotation'. (you can disable it in option/general>File operations - For lossless operations, ...)
So when you use 'lossless rotation', descript.ion is bad after??

I checked to see if the "For lossless operation, make a backup" had been selected. It was not selected (no check mark in the box next to this option). So without using "lossless operation" one or more .bak files is being created. This as never been as issue when using XnView with windows vista. Do you think it would help if I uninstalled XnView and then reinstalled it? (If you think it would help please let me know what directories and files I should backup prior to taking this action). Or is there a newer version I should be using with windows 7?

Yes, try to install it again, you can rename the xnview.ini too

Yes, try to install it again, you can rename the xnview.ini too

I have downloaded and installed version 1.98.5. It will take awhile to figure out if the new version will resolve my disappearing description issue. Perhaps, it would be best to close out this topic. If I continue to have a problem I will start a new post.

I can confirm to michaeld2.
We have XNView 1.98.2 togehter with the image files on an ext. usb harddisk. I used it with my Windows XP system to add descriptions (ctrl d) - worked well. My husband used this equipment with her Win7 notepad and ended up in .bak file copies of every jpg she tried to add descriptions to. The comments went to the descript.ion file but as records for the .bak files.

But anyhow! XNView is a great tool for handling images!

Do you change the embedded comment too?

Yes, we did using Ctrl D.

Ok, editing embedded comment create the .bak, i must change that...
