Why does the "display all types" option exist?

I never bothered to give it much thought before, but I find myself wondering why the "display all image file types" option even exists. I mean, why would you ever want to turn it off? "Oh, I have images in 20 different formats, but I only want to be able to view 2 of those."
I can see wanting to turn off non-image files (like audio/video/etc), but that's a seperate option.
I can also see wanting to not open a few specific file types, but that too is a seperate option.
Disabling the ability to view a whole class of file types (especially when you don't even have any way to know WHICH file types will be excluded, except by trial & error) though just doesn't seem to make any sense.
