MP 0.48 WinXP: Browser unresponsive if progress bar visible

Edit: renamed topic.

This issue has been in all versions of MP, but seems even worse in 0.48.

To reproduce:
  • 1. Identify a folder full of unthumbed pictures that do not have EXIF thumbs (PNGs, for instance).
    2. Navigate the MP browser to that folder.
    3. Observe MP display progress bar while creating thumb images.
    4. While the progess bar is visible, attempt to use MP for something (anything, such as navigation or any menu activity).
    5. Observe either sluggish behavior or complete "white out" of main menu.
    6. If menu is "whited out" then MP is completely unresponsive except for window controls (Max, min, etc.)
    7. Wait until thumbing completes.
    8. Observe normal MP speed and behavior.
    9. Exit MP.
    10. Restart MP and return to previous folder (selected above).
    11. Observe progress bar slowly moves
    12. Attempt to use MP for something (anything)
    13. Again observe either sluggish behavior or complete "white out" of main menu.
Since the period of hesitation (steps 5 and/or 12) appears to be directly proportional to (number-of-images-in-folder) TIMES (average-image-size), my guess is that MP is recreating thumbs when it doesn't have to.

The hesitation I describe here occurs upon initial entry to ANY folder after an MP restart. Even entering a folder with 1 image causes the progress bar to appear and MP to hang for a few seconds.

Here is an image illustrating the problem:

This folder has already been fully thumbnailed. The thumbnails appear instantly on entering the folder, but the progress bar appears anyway and slowly advances. In the meantime there is an hourglass and MP is completely unresponsive.

Unfortunately, for me, this version is just too slow to use.

No problem with previous version?
5. Observe either sluggish behavior or complete "white out" of main menu.
I can load preview, scroll in thumbnails, ... without problems...
11. Observe progress bar slowly moves
I don't have delay

Perhaps my disk are too quick, on XP? You have only JPG or PNG in this folder? How many files?
I have tried with PNG 5000x3200

I can simulate the problem by clicking on the C:\ root drive in the browser.
There is a lot of hdd activity and it took more then a minute before i could switch to another directory or drive.

XnViewMP 0.48 Win XP SP3

Do you have big files on c:? If you disabled 'thumbnail for folder'?

Indeed, i may case the problem is solved by disabling "show thumbnail for folder".

because of 'threading' issues
