Windows 7: TWAIN source not found unless XnView run as admin

I've been using Windows 7 (32-bit, Pro) for some time with a few devices that provide TWAIN drivers. Recently -- although it's been a few months since I had to scan anything -- some of the devices failed to appear in the Select Source window... not just in XnView, but also in some other apps. After reinstalling drivers and some further trial and error it turned out that the Select Source window would be populated if the applications in question were run with admin rights.
The problem seems to only occur with older applications. The recent 2.8 release of GIMP doesn't have this problem, and neither does a freshly-unzipped copy of the latest XnViewMP beta. XNView, IrfanView and an old copy of Corel PhotoPaint needed to be run as administrator before they can 'see' the sources. Maybe something has changed in Windows 7 due to an OS update? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
