0.50 Debian: crashes on opening directory with images

This occurs when

double-clicking on any sub-dir in folder tree, or

a thumbnail of a dir with images, or

by clicking the icon "choose dir" in setting >start-up directory.

file menu >open also crashes prog

clicking on expanded folders of a favorite doesn't open them in thumbs panel.
I may be using it wrong -I just downloaded and ran the bash script to start program.
should I move the folder any where, I can't find any instructions.
thanks for help -sorry if this was already found out/fixed

sorry, not only dir's with images but any dir that is lower down on the tree, two levels down from /home
it actually worked properly for a moment, but after I removed some thumbnail labels... crashes like before

XnviewMP 0.51 - no more crashes, but I still have this problem with the Favorites panel:

clicking on expanded folders of a favorite doesn't open them in thumbs panel.
And the favorites don't expand more than one layer down.
Perhaps they are not meant to, but I find it much faster to work with favorites than with the file browser which shows the whole system and needs scrolling to the right after EVERY folder selection to select another one.
This inconvenience is a let down for me... any work around?
