- Ah Ah ! It's an info I wish to see on the fora for a very long while!
- I thought already to a small coloured label beside / in the avatars: we were talking of that joking with "Ouistiti" a.k.a. Paul V...n out the forum recently ! We thought to something like :

both : •
other: •

Indeed, I support, and sign up with my two hands ! And with my feet, even !
- Seriously, this could be very useful, since in English it's very difficult to know who is the writer at gender, that can cause conflicts and misunderstandings… and very ambiguous situations too !
- I saw sometimes a girl on some forum : everyone rushed to help her !
- Humm … No cheat, please ! Let indicate your real gender !

Just an opinion : "male" and "female" sound awful in some languages in which they are reserved only for animals... So I suggest to choose the coloured solution...

Actually I don't bother much whether people are male or female here in the forum. Sure enough I'm a bit more helpful and friendly when there's a she-member, but apart from that it does not matter much to me.

I'd be interested to know what women think about this "gender" tag. Would you really use it?

If we think of using an image / symbol, we should simply use the standard symbol for women and men. For those who don't remember the biology lessons well:

I think it would be useful to know if I have to write "'he' or 'she' helped me with..." Especially if the user name and avatar are not obviously one gender.
In some other forums I use an alias that is not clearly a gender and I am very amused that nearly everyone thinks I am male. And even when the gender flag in the profile is set as female. So I am not sure if it would help for others but for me it would.

I can remember that I had to write a letter to somebody who wanted to work in the kindergarten where I am board member. The first name was foreign and I found on the internet male and female persons with this name. It was very difficult with the salutatory address. In this case a gender flag really would have helped.

I think this is a terrible idea, it's too personal for a start.
Sure I would like to see more females/women on the forums but this isn't the way to do it. Not only that, this could be the beginning of sexual harressment via PM or email!!

Let's just stick to finding bugs or requesting features.

Also, you're forgetting one thing I come from "The Scene" where people like to be stealthful and careful about info. I'm slowly changing in this area though.

Before someone requests it, I'll shoot it down now...
ABXZone.com tried a system where people were ranked on how they contributed on the forums which FAILED. I was one of the users that left and didn't go back until it was removed.

I think most of xnview forum guests/users are adult and intelligent. I like anonymity too, but this information is not required, also, you can still use this forum as guest - completely anonymous, so I can see no reason against this "gender feature". And - most users (or all except you) like this idea....

Ok, you're right I went over-the-top on the idea.

I never could figure out the origin of the female symbol. The male one is obvious, but what's the horizontal line on the female one supposed to represent? Her bust? The bottom of here skirt? Nothing at all? ...?

For "other", we could always use the prince symbol.

It's been my experience on other forums that many people either don't set a gender, or set the wrong gender intentionally. (Some guys like to pretend to be girls in order to recieve friendlier treatment, some girls pretend to be guys to avoid discrimination and/or being plagued by guys trying to hit on them.)
Personally, I never give out more personal info than is truly needed. I really despise sites that demand your real name, address, or other info that has nothing at all to do with the site in question. I usually respond by giving them info such as "real name: Screw You", "address: 666 Your Butt", etc.

(Sigh…) Mine is as is, so I receive many letters, emails, and calls of phone-advertising for "Mrs Ch…". There are only four first names like this in French, but they are very spread… Irritating !

- Temporarily, those who like the principle could add the coloured circle in their signatures, like I did myself now; to get the same colours, the codes are below : { Aside : the damned bitmap font for "Code" here doesn't write the “•” character Might be changed, if possible… }
