Problem with Russian Characters in filename

XnView has issues opening files that use Russian characters.
I'm not Russia but I have a friend who lives there and when he sends me an image file with Russian characters XnView used to display an error message.
Now it just picks a different file to open, this obviously created confusion. This happens when i double click a file in Windows explorer. I'm on Vista x64.
