Xnview 1.99.6 (classic) - Metadata issues
Posted: Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:07 pm
I have some issues with the creation and modification of metadata. To make the work flow transparent I’m describing the steps in detail:
step 1) Giving with Ctrl-D each photo a different description/comment (test 1 ... test 7).
- All boxes in this menu are marked.
- Save.
step 2) copy comment to IPTC description
- select all photos
- Menu Metadata => copy comment to IPTC description
IPTC tabs are created for each photo containing the correct description (test 1....test 7)
step 3) Writing date/time to IPTC
- select all photos
- Ctrl-I => IPTC menu =>date/time => set „EXIF taken“, write to all => close
(options selected: „keep date/time“ and “combine new and existing values => overwrite existing values“)
What experienced is that if I proceed steps 1 to 3 then
- date and time are correctly written to IPTC, but the IPTC caption is modified to the value of the first picture (test 1). All photos have „test 1“
- if i proceed step 1, step 3, step 2, than all comments/description are properly kept plus correct date/time is set for each photo
Is there an explanation for this different results?
I deleted IPTC data and restarted with steps 1, 3, 2., then
step 4) Creating XMP
- All photos selected
- Menu Metadata => create new XMP-data
XMP tab is created, but date/time in IPTC tab have been deleted for all photos. Why?
Captions in EXIF and IPTC tab are still set to the correct values.
step 5) Proceeded again with step 3 (set date/time)
- Selected all photos
- Ctrl-I => IPTC menu =>date/time => set „EXIF taken“, write to all => close
(options selected: „keep date/time“ and “combine new and existing values => overwrite existing values“)
Caption in XMP and EXIF still have the correct value of each photo, but IPTC caption is set to the value of the first photo (test 1).
I can repeat the procedure again and again without ever getting the correct values in EXIF, IPTC and XMP.
I am a bit confused about this behaviour because I have no idea where I went wrong?
Thanks for your help
