XnView Software

v0.64 hangs when trying to browse a directory with *.MTS movies (from my Panasonic Camera). I always have to kill Xnview using task manager.

There was some time since I played around with codecs as I am using KMPlayer or VLC to play movies (MTS) now. How do I check which codecs would be used in XnView for my MTS movies?

1. What VGA do you have? ATI/AMD?

2. Go to Tools | Settings | File list | Custom filter

Look at the 'Video' row.

Where appears mts?

In the MPEG lane?

If yes, then try this:

Scenario 1.

If you installed last time some codec packs try to uninstall them.

If it works then stop here.

Else...

Scenario 2.

1. Go to Apple.com
2. Find, download & install the latest version of QuickTime for your OS
3. Delete the mts extension from MPEG lane and write it in the QuickTime lane.

It works?

2. MTS appears with MPEG
-- I deleted it from MPEG and added it to Quicktime instead.

XnView now creates Thumbnails and does not hang when creating the Thumbnails
However, the preview window is blank and if I try to open the file (Ctrl+O), XnView hangs .

MPEG codecs today are a mess.

Here Pierre should say his word:

If he still uses the MPEG lane when it plays in the preview window then he must fix this.

If not, we'll see...

MTS is only in the Quicktime lane (and I upgraded to the latest Quicktime version (v7.7.5 on WIN7-64 bit))

To play movie, it's Qt API

Uhmm... Does that mean that XnView is not able to play it?
If so, I guess that I will need to set XnView to play ALL movies using associated program rather than XnView, because it is not possible to set only MTS to play with QT and other movies using XnView?

No, no is not like that.

XnView MP (and many other programs) talks with the OS.

XnView MP does NOT know how to show MTS/MOV/AVI etc. - Windows knows.

The oversimplified process is something like this:

XnView: Hey OS, here is a MTS movie and here is a screen surface. Can you show the movie on this surface?
OS: Well, let's see... (it looks in his bag about a piece of software who knows how to read MTS movies) ...well, yes, I think so. Who can decode this file?
A codec: I do! Give me the file and the screen surface where I must throw the result.
OS: Here it is...

The codec starts to show the movie.

Now the Important part is that the codec is different than the QuickTime player / VLC / Media Player etc. These players use codecs as well.

The confusion comes from at least from the following sources:

1. The codecs are 'invisible' to the final user
2. The codecs are (usually but not always) installed with a player - with a "program" because otherwise the final user will see that 'nothing' is installed. He needs a program to run in order to see the movie.
3. The codecs doesn't have a distinctive name. That's why we're forced to call them with the same name of the... ....main/family movie format which they support (QuickTime, MPEG codec) or with a general name (K-Lite, X, LAV etc.)

So, theoretically, you don't need to externally assign the MTS format to QuickTime in order to play it.

BUT...

1. Close XnView MP
2. Open the QuickTime player
3. File | Open... and select an MTS movie.

It plays?

4. Close QuickTime player
5. Open XnView MP and try to play EXACTY the same movie from step 3.

It plays?

Quicktime cannot play the MTS movie. However, it plays fine in Windows Media Player (I believe that there is native support for MTS in WIN 7).
I tried to add MTS to the MPEG, Quicktime and AVI lanes in XnView settings, but none of them works
