Hello.
Fist all I would like to thank you for this great program which I have been using for many years. The work which the developer has put on it, is very much appreciated.

Now with my problem.

I recently updated to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.
I installed the latest version of XnView Classic 2.13.
I associated the file types following the guides I found here.
All the file types that XnView supports, were associated without any trouble.
The Icon files (.ico) were not associated so I had to do it manually using the "Default Programs" option in Control Panel.

Unfortunately, now all the Icon files are shown in the Windows Explorer with XnView's default program icon instead of displaying their own icons that contain.
This was not happening with XnView in Windows 7.
It was also not happening in Windows 8.1 when the Icons files were associated with Windows' default Photo Manager program. All the individual icons were shown correctly with their own image.

I uploaded two screenshots so that you can the understand the problem better:

Icons associated with Photo Manager

Icons associated with XnView Classic

I repeat that this is only happening with Win 8.1, I didnt have this kind of problem with Xnview in Win 7.

So is there a solution to this? Do you know how I can fix it so that the icon files are shown with their own internal image instead of Xnview's custom icon, like it used to do?
I really need this.

The one inside the options menu of Xnview?
Yes, I have used that. But as I said, the icon file type is not among the formats which Xnview supports.
That's why I had to manually associate it.

These are the supported formats shown in the associations window, when I run the tool:

As you can see, the icon format is not there.

When you did associate ico files with XnView with the windows tool, this tool certainly did also change the default icon value for icon files from "%1" (self representation) to XnView.exe. That's why all your icon files are now represented with the same XnView icon in explorer. You probably need to fix it by editing the registry as I am not sure the windows association tool will let you do that. I might be wrong on that last point as I am not familiar with Windows 8 at all but on the earlier Microsoft OS I use I would need to edit the registry.

Hello.

Having the same problem here on my Windows 8.1 system. Could someone explain which exact entries in the registry I need to edit to restore things back to normal?
I tried to look through HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico but it seems to be in default state (compared to registry on other PC, not affected by XnView).

Have no ideas where to look next :|
