Linux - tarball vs precompiled -- differences?

The two or three times I've tried MP so far, I've downloaded the precompiled versions. I've noticed other people on this forum talking about feature X or function Y, which I've never seen in the concurrent builds I've "installed." So if anyone has tried the former in one Linux and the latter in another Linux, same build number and (in the respective Linuxes) roughly the same availiable resources and libraries, etc., and has noticed a difference between them in any way, I hope they will add to this thread.
