Hey folks,

I hanen't had this problem before (not that I use this program much).
It's cool though.

I need instructions on how to save a file. (Out put a file).

You can use the Output tab...
Select the output folder, filename, file format and compression options etc. and check any other relevant options!

When I do this, (I saved to my desktop) and go to the desktop the file isn't there.
If I click on the button on the right side of the "Output" line it shows the file is saved there but it is grayed out.
What am I doing wrong?

I saw something similar once and thought I'd found a bug, but when I looked more closely later I couldn't reproduce it. From memory, I think I'd set the output to a specified folder (rather than the source folder) but the specified folder was the source folder, if you follow.

Alternatively (it was a while back) I think the output file may have been created correcty, but I had become confused and was actually looking for it in the wrong place.

Could you post a screenshot of your Output tab (In Windows: 'Alt + Print screen' to capture just the open tab, save the image as a PNG for best results).

Edit:

You might select the 'After conversion' -- 'Open file explorer' option if it isn't already selected, if you could possibly be looking in the wrong place for the output file, which I think I eventually found was my problem.

The Status tab, which opens automatically after convertion is complete, should also confirm that the output file(s) have been produced and show their location.

I have a screen shot but I'm not sure how to attach it using this forum.

How's that done?

I should mention I'm running Ubuntu in case it's relavent.

A good question... Here's a quick guide which may need some fine tuning later:

1. Scroll down the compose window and then click on the 'Upload attachment' button:


2. Click on the 'Browse...' button and browse to the file to be uploaded and select it:


3. Click on the 'Add the file' button:


4. Attachments can be placed 'inline' when they can be placed anywhere desired in the post, as the images in this post are, or left at the end of the post where they are initially placed when uploaded.


When an attachment is placed 'inline' it is placed at the current cursor position: normally at the start of post unless the cursor has been set to the required position, but if necessary it can then be cut and pasted to the desired location in the post.


5. Repeat the above steps for any other attachments to be added to the post.


An option is provided in the attachment list below the post to add a 'File comment' which can be used if desired to display a caption immediately below displayed images.


Note that only certain image file types are actually displayed as images in posts, currently (only?) JPG and PNG files (recommended for screenshots).

Do you have write privileges for the location you are outputting the file to?

Not sure how I missed the "Upload Attachment" tab!

Have you loaded an input file, there isn't one shown on the Input tab in your screenshot...

The procedure is:

1. Load the input file(s)

2. Set up the desired actions to be performed on the input files

3. Set up the output settings

4. Click on 'Convert'

The Status tab will then, hopefully, open and show that the loaded files have been converted successfully.

There is no input files!

OK, I'm going to focus here and stop wasting other peoples time!

This isn't as simple as I had originally thought.

Below are screen shots of each field as I went through and did the process.
I got a clean input, the action went as expected (rescaled it), the location for the file (Desktop) as well as the file name (3 foot sun) and format (.jpeg) all the same as before, the Status went as expected with a question to overwrite the file as it already existed.
All this went perfectly, no file showed up on the desktop.

Good use of attachments...

I'm not a Linux user so I can't reproduce what you're doing exactly, although I'm not too sure about your output path and whether you're writing to where you intend to write.

When faced with an inexplicable situation the important thing is to keep trying tests even if they seem quite speculative, so could you try the following quick test:

On the Output tab, select the option 'After conversion -- Open file explorer' .

That should remove any possible confusion about whether the file is being created, possibly not where you're expecting to find it.

Failing that, in an earlier post you wrote:

Could you possibly be writing inadvertently to a location for which you don't have write permission??

Trying different things should have been my first move!

I saved it to a different folder and son of a gun it's there!

It seems I can't save a file from this program to my desktop. WHO KNEW!!
Must be a Ubuntu thing.

could you try to enter an absolute output path?

The JPG you wish to convert is on your desktop and you wish to place the output JPG on the desktop too?

On the Output tab, could you enter the 'Folder' as:

/home/allen/Desktop

That is the full or absolute path to your desktop: the text you entered isn't being recognised by Ubuntu as your desktop and is likely leading to the creation of a new folder which likely isn't accessable from your user account.

When you loaded the input file you browsed to your desktop and selected the input JPG; when you configure the Output tab, it is probably best to browse to the desired output folder and then let XnConvert enter the correct path.

Just for fun I tried a direct path to the desktop and got the same results (No file).
I was just playing with this and thought the desktop would be a handy place to put the file.
I could fiddle with it and figure it all out but it's not important as long as I can put a converted file where it really should be.
