Copying images by drag-and-drop should work

You can move images into other folders by drag-and-drop.
But you cant copy them this way.
In Windows-explorer it is very very usefull to just press CTRL when drag-and-dropping files:
Then you get a small + symbol at the cursor and you are copying instead of moving the choosen files.

XNview should have this simple and common feature as well.
It is already in use in XNview when drag-and-dropping
into the folders-icons in the images-tab.

So it should be easy to have it in the folders-tab, too.

Exactly.
Moving this way works like in WinExplorer.
But Copying does not. CTRL has no effect in
changing mode from Move to Copy.

SHIFT does not have any effect.
Pictures are moved in this case, too
