Cannot double click certain video types in browser 2yr+ bug

After 2 years this bug is still here, I originally posted here with samples

Basically, unless the thumbnail has just been created, you cannot open or double click .ts TV recordings, whether in MPEG2 or H264 encoding, or some .m4v files, you get the message:
"Format of the file <name of file.ts> cannot be determined"
However, you can select 'open with' a selected program or associated program
