problems with jpeg 2000

I want to start using jpeg 2000 as my main storage format, but larger images about 10Mpx or more cannot be saved from tiff to jp2 (an error is always occurring).

Second problem is that viewing jp2 images is much slower than viewing any other format in XnView. I even cannot cancel loading of big image in jp2, whereas other formats can be cancelled without any problem. Work with slightly larger jp2 is horror in XnView, but jpeg 2000 itself was specially designed for work with large images so it is probably only poor decoder implementation.

This message box is displayed when saving 16384x8192 tiff:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\XnView\xnview.exe
abnormal program termination
OK

Another problem with large image:
any attempt to view large image (with resolution 21600x21600) from XnView browser ends with "Not enough memory", but when you use windows explorer and use "open with XnView" on the same image, everything is ok and this large image can be viewed without problems.

Is it possible to send me a sample?

kappor,

Try using Lurawave JP2.
Second problem is that viewing jp2 images is much slower than viewing any other format in XnView.
You haven't tried viewing a BMF yet, have you? ;)

XnView 1.82.2 Full version witch I have installed seams to stuck (it doesn’t responds for a few seconds) when I try to load a *.jp2 file whether it is in thumbnails or viewer mode. After maybe more than 10 seconds there is a possibility to load the picture (though it doesn’t always). And this after I have enabled the “Ignore read errors” option in the read options area.

Try this image: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses ... 640-01.jp2

WinXP Pro, P4 2,5 GHz, 256MB RAM

JP2 is an inherantly slow format. JP2 images are slower to save and to load than almost any other common format, regardless what program you're using. This is one of the biggest flaws with JP2.
You may want to use truecolor PNG instead. PNGs made from photographic images will be larger than JP2s, but still smaller than TIFFs, and the PNG format is considerably faster than JP2.
