Batch number start with 01

I've been using XnView for years as a freelance photographer. I use it mainly for IPTC data labeling and for batch renaming and numbering. It's a great little program that has saved me from having to buy a really expensive program that is less intuitive.
But one thing has always annoyed me and I have never been able to figure out how to fix this. When batch renaming and numbering files are numbered by an underscore and two digit number. For example, if the new file name is PIC, the second file is numbered PIC_02.jpg. But the first number is always skipped, as in PIC.jpg. so I always have to go back and rename the first file to PIC_01.jpg to match the number and sequence. Why doesn't the first file get renumbered like the rest? How can I set it so that the first number ends with _01.jpg?
