Categories not showing in 0.75

Hi,

It seems that in 0.75 (also in 0.71) the Categories Filter doesn't work, even if the number of images in each category is correctly computed.

Steps:

1. Mark 5 files with the category C1.
2. Close/Open the program
3. Go to Categories Filter and click on C1

Expected:

5 thumbs should appear in the Thumbs pane.

Actual:

Nothing appears.

Notes:

The C1's caption is correctly modified to C1(5)

The last version which works ok and correctly displays the above 5 images is 0.69

Hmm, time for a stupid question...what is the categories filter?
If I click on the menu item view->filter by, or on the filter icon, the list of filtering options does not include categories.

?!?

Go to

View | Data Pane | Filter...

In order to hide/unhide it.

Hey, that's great. Nothing (apparently) changed when I turned it on or off, but then I noticed it was hidden under the folder view.

And it does work for me. on the 0.75 beta.

It also works in v0.72 x64 for windows.

The side tab is much more obvious in the default theme, but I was using a dark theme and the vertical text is harder to see.

After more research I found that on my machine sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't.

Yes, but it seems that isn't related. I (finally) found how to reliably reproduce this bug:

0. (prerequisites) Have a database with several folders cataloged. Let's say that we have the folders c:\f1, c:\f2, ..., c:\f10 and the categories C1, C2, ..., C10

1. Open XnView MP.
2. Go to C:\F1
3. Make the Categories Filter pane the active pane. That is, if the pane is hidden, make it visible and if it is needed click on the appropriate tab. You should end up with something like this (scroll to view):
Categories-Bug.jpg
Categories-Bug.jpg (43.89 KiB) Viewed 830 times
...which is a quite standard GUI layout if someone wants to work with the categories.

4. Click on a Category - for example on C2. (Not sure if this step is required, but anyway...) You should see the photos from that category.
5. Close the program.
6. Open the program. You should see the GUI layout from step 3 with the Categories Filter in front.
7. Click on a Category - for example C2. This MUST be your first action. Do NOT go to any other folder, favorite etc.

Expected: You should see the photos from that category.

Actual: You see a blank thumbnail pane.

I still cannot reproduce it following your instructions. I start Xnview beta, wait for it to populate the list with the number of images in each category, then click on a category that has at least 1 image, and it lists those images.

However I have noticed something else strange.
I normally work with details view and less often with thumbnails, so I cannot really say if this is related or just a coincidence.

Now, the odd thing is that it has started showing many images with the wrong thumbnails, including some that I just labelled earlier today.
Some folders have thumbnails from tiff images nowhere near them, one jpeg has a thumbnail for a folder (showing 4 smaller thumbnails inside), the jpeg beside it has simply a white panel. But the filenames still match the correct categories that I filter.
