...but how do you batch rename in xnview? I know I've done it before, but now I can't find the rename option.

For Batch renaming, you simply select the files in the XnView browser and then choose "Tools > Batch rename...".

Renaming is only available from the browser view?

Yes, currently available in Browser view, since the "Batch rename" dialog does not allow for creating a file list. In topic
"Unified way for creating file list" you'll find a suggestion to improve this.

That explains why I couldn't find it, I never use browser mode.
I don't see why batch rename can't work the same as batch convert. Indeed, I expected renaming to be one of the advanced options in batch convert (alongside sharpen, resize, etc). If you can you batch convert from view mode and generate the list of files for it, I don't see why you can't do batch rename from view mode the same way.

Using the browser for that is much more convenient IMO.
A general note: the browser is what makes XnView fundamentally different from IrfanView. So, if an enhanced viewer is all you want, you may be better of using that one. No offence intentions here (just in case...). That's just how i see it.

1) I don't think browser/thumbnail mode is hardly ever convenient (in any prog, not just xnview). If you have more than a few files in the directory, making the thumbnails just takes too blasted long, plus they're usually either too small to be of any real use or so large that you can only see 4 at a time. This is why I never use browser mode except when I'm organizing files and moving bunches of images from one folder to another.
2) Switching to a different mode to do a simple task is never more convenient. 99.9% of the time I already know the current names of the files I wish to rename, so being able to do it straight from the dialogs in view mode is infinitely more convenient than having to switch to browser mode, navigate to the right folder, wait for it to generate thumbnails that I don't need, select the files->rename.
If I remember correctly, batch rename used to be available in view mode in 1.74. I know batch convert used to be called multiconvert (I always got multiconvert and sequence convert mixed up when i was looking for the batch convert), and I think batch rename was right there alongside them. Was this the case? If so, can i still download 1.74 somewhere? (I seem to recall an archive of old versions being mentioned here somewhere, but can't find the thread again.)

Old versions are available on
http://download.xnview.com/old_versions . But old versions should not be needed for normal usage, we should do something about this and make the current version please people.

Yeah, I finally found that thread a little bit ago. I just installed 1.74 and tried it, and I was wrong, it didn't have batch rename in view mode.
I see sequenceconvert has a renaming ability (in 1.8 at least), but I have no clue how to use sequenceconvert.
