A bug I just noticed on XnViewMP 0.78 x64 (Jan 14 2016) (ran on Ubuntu Studio 14.04 64 bits, generic Linux kernel 3.16.0-60): when using command "reconstruct thumbnails" ("Outils/Métadonnées/Vignette EXIF - Reconstruire" in French) removes all metadata of the picture . Too sad ...

Strange, I do not have this issue here (XnViewMP 0.78 x64 deb + Ubuntu 14.04LTS) ... but be careful because near (not far) of this menu "EXIF Thumbnail - Rebuild" you also have "Clean..." and that can delete by inadvertence all meta-data.
PS: maybe you can post a .jpg sample here to a specific check.

You're right, but as you can see in attached screenshot (taken with my smartphone as with XnView, print screen feature does to work when menus are displayed ...), indeed I'm using the "reconstruction" menu line and not the cleaning one.

And, as shown in the same screenshot, once rotated a picture, when I want it to have its thumbnail reconstructed, I'm losing all its metadata.

Another screenshot is attached: is it possible that some thumbnail option is involved?

... Ah OK .... For the screenshot "when menus are displayed" into XnViewMP: Tools>Capture...> delay 5 secondes (... and you have 5 s to open the menu)

Yep, that's what I feared ... I guess that such a bug would not last too long if it would occur everywhere...

To be honest I didn't search the forum too much about such a bug — it's bad, I'm truly ashamed ... but I tried a little bit and was not too much sure which words to seek for.

Anyway; I'll try to investigate more to understand, and of course will update you in case I find something relevant.

just some more information about that bug:

• it looks like in fact any modification, removes all metadata which was in the image previously. For instance, adding IPTC metadata, also removes the EXIF metadata;
  I forgot to warn that I have ExifTool libraries installed; I didn't test yet, to remove it temporarirly just to try.

I'll let you know futher investigations.

In fact I looked in the Ubuntu software center ("Logithèque Ubuntu"), and discovered that when searching for "ExifTool", I could see that the ExifTool library was indeed installed ("libimage-exiftool-perl"), but not the "libimage-info-perl". Thus did I install it.

And now adding IPTC metadata in my images, doesn't remove EXIF metadat anymore... yet any other modification which changes the image itself (like cropping, convert to grey levels, rotating the image...) still makes all metadata disappear (IPTC included) — no need to "reconstruct thumbnail" actually.

Well as I just wrote in private mail so to send you the URL of a picture, unfortunately I didn't keep the tests I made before installing libimage-info-perl library. So the image which I sent you has EXIF removed, but I cropped and rotated it, together with adding IPTC's, and thus I can't tell you now what exactly removed the EXIF .

Updated to version 0.79; test done: add IPTC, EXIF are OK. Resize: EXIF and IPTC removed .
