Hello,

Setting a category to a picture works different in toolbar and category panel. If you set a category over the toolbar it is set to the picture file right now and the tag icon is immediately updated on the thumbnail. If you do the same in the category panel, the setting to the picture file and showing the tag icon on the thumbnail is only updated after you clicked to a other thumbnail.

yes update is only made when yu change the file, because here you can add/remove many keywords (can take time)

But potential changes shouldn't be cancelled while pressing "Refresh (F5)" (see my mentioned other post), isn't it?
