Removing Background in Png

Very often I have to take a black and white image and change the white background to transparent so it will place correctly in my publications.
I wish XnView had a way I could magic-wand an area of an image and make it transparent.

Perhaps a way to make the background of your PNG image transparent:
1. Open your image
2. Convert the image into a colour mapped image with e.g. 16 colours (Image > Convert to Colours...", 16 colours)
3. Open colour palette of the image with "Image > Edit Palette..." menu
4. Choose the background colour and check "Transparency". Confirm your change with "OK"
5. Save your image under a different name in a format that supports colour palettes (e.g. PNG, GIF)
--> Your image should have a transparent background, now.
Please note that in the steps above I've used the terms of XnView Classic. I'll replace these with the terms used in XnView MP tonight.
