Auto open folder

With "show files in subfolder" activated and a huge folder list it is not easy to jump into the folder of a selected file.
An auto open folder option would be helpful. This means that when folder pane is open and visible and I select a file, the folder where the file is located gets automatically highlighted and opened.
I am aware that this could interfere with an intended copy or move drag and drop operation. So another option would be to include an auto-folder option into the context menu. Meaning: Select file->Right click->Auto open folder -> Folder gets opened and highlighted.
I see that there is a context menu item "Open containing folder" but it is always greyed out. So I have no idea what it does or what it is intended to do.
