Is it a star rating bug?

Hi,
I'm a new user of xnviewmp. I installed it because I wanted an easy tool to set star rating to my photos and I wanted the rating to be attached to the jpg file and not stored in a separate DataBase. By this way, the rating remains if I copy the photo or use another program.
In the settings, I have enabled the option to export the rate to XMP metadata. I can see that it works because, when I set a rate in xnviewmp and then open the file with Windows File Explorer, it does have the expected rate.
However, I have noticed a problem when I do the things the other way around: I set the rate with another tool. Then I go to xnviewmp and it doesn't see the rate

(
(whereas the file does have the rate in its properties)
Is this a bug?
Thanks for the help
Regards
Olivier

You need perhaps to re-synchronize the file with catalog, please try View>update catalog from files

Unfortunately it doesn't work.
I've got 16 files with stars in this directory and, only enough, XnViewMP is showing only 3 of them with stars.
If you do the same test does it work? I mean: Assign the stars from windows explorer properties and check if XnViewMP notices the stars.
Thank you

A stupid question:
For the rating, is it possible to configure the tool to only rely on the content of the file (XMP data) and never use this catalog?
Thanks

I can see the same issue
Two jpeg files in a directory : im01.jpg , im02.jpg , already viewed by xnviewmp.
Using xnviewmp, rating set on im01.jpg
Using another tool, rating set on im02.jpg
Xnviewmp will never read rating for im02.jpg, unless directory is renamed, or im02.jpg moved to another place.
It's a "refresh" problem
metadata used :
exif:ifd0:rating , exif:ifd0:ratingpercent (windows explorer)
xmp:xmp-xmp:rating , xmp:xmp-microsoft:ratingpercent (both, xnviewmp and windows explorer)

if the tool doesn't change file date, XnViewMP can't detect the change, so please use 'update catalog from files'

I've just tried to reproduce the problem in XnView MP 0.84 on Windows 10 64bit but everything worked fine - no bug.
That's the steps I performed:
1. Assign four-star rating to JPG file using Windows Explorer
2. Start XnView and browsed the folder containing the JPG file.
-> XnView displays four-star rating for thumbnail and in preview (correct)
3. Assign two-star rating to JPG file using Windows Explorer
XnView still displays the four star rating (o.k.)
4. Press F5 to update XnView.
-> XnView displays two-star rating for thumbnail and in preview (correct)
@OlivierGrenoble: Could you please check using v0.84? Is there still a problem (that I don't see)?

Not reproducable and no feedback.

Closed (Please post here if the problem should still occur for you).

The problem still exists (XN View MP Windows 0.94.3 64bit)
Stars assigned in Explorer are displayed in XN View when the directory is opened for the first time. If I then rate another file in the explorer, it will not be displayed in XN View. Also the menu items "Update catalog from files" does not help.
If I change the rating of a file in XN View (different number of stars), or rate a file without stars, then these changes are not displayed in the explorer. I have executed the menu item "Update files from catalog ".

do you use catalog only to store rating?

I rate my photos with stars and sometimes save keywords in the IPTC data. The stars should then also be displayed in other programs such as Windows Explorer or Adobe Bridge.
I have only tested XnView MP for a short time, so far I use XnView Classic under Windows. Unfortunately the star rating in Classic does not work for other programs.

It doesn't matter whether I assign or change the stars in the XN-View-MP browser or in the XN image view. In the Windows -Explorer
or Adobe-Bridge, these are not displayed afterwards (always 0 stars).
In the XN-View browser alone it works, there I can also filter by it.
