What you can do (and probably already know): When moving the mouse over the slider for thumbnail size, you can use the mouse wheel to change size quickly. To the right of the slider for changing thumbnail size there is a graphical toolbar button with tooltip "Click to change between width of thumbnail and number of thumbnails shown per row".
