xnview not getting focus

When double clicking an image, Xnview opens and shows the image, but the window doesn't have focus. I usually double click the image then use the keyboard, so it's a bit disconcerting for a second or two when nothing happens. I am using v2.44, Windows 10 Pro. I am not sure exactly when this behaviour started, and can't figure out why it's happening. At first I thought it might be a Total Commander problem, but I just noticed it also happens using Windows Explorer. Any ideas what might be the problem?

If you dra&drop an image file on XnView's icon, same problem?

I have just been digging deeper and it's thankfully not an XnView problem. Whichever type of file I double click, its associated program loads in the background and whichever file manager I was using retains focus. I downloaded a couple more file managers and they exhibit the same behaviour. Very strange. Methinks it's time to restore an older Windows image.
