IPTC variables not working

Hey,
I'm new to XnViewMP and trying to put Metadata on my Pictures. I Preferably wouldn't always write all the information everywhere. I noticed that for example next to caption there is a little black triangle where you have the option "insert from". This I assume lets you insert a value from a different field. However all the options are grey when I try to do it.
Has someone any advise on how to do it properly or did I misunderstood the function?
Just so you know, "insert" and "Copy into" work perfectly fine. Just not the other way around (which would be much more important to me).
