Noticeable delay when viewing next image in an archive

I use Xnview as a comic book reader (.cbr, .cbz) when viewing the larger files there is a noticeable delay when moving to the next page/image.
The strange thing is if I just keep pushing "page down" and move quickly from image to image everything is fine but if I take the time to read the page before moving on there is a delay in displaying the next page.
I have enabled the option to read one image ahead but that does not seem to do anything.
Does anyone have any ideas?
