Lightroom not seeing star ratings

Hi, hope someone could help, i'd be very grateful.
Just downloaded the program, star rated a few Nef files but when re synchronizing in Lightroom it doesn't see my star ratings? Doesn't seem to be adding a file to the folder perhaps so lightroom can see the rating??? Probably not clicked a tick box, missed something simple im sure? If anyone could help would be great and I'll buy this software if it can do this!
