Here is something that would save me a lot of time.

When I do a batch convert on a number of images, they might be in 10 or 15 different folders. When it does the conversion it puts all the finished conversions into one directory. I'd like XnView to put the converted files BACK into their original directories and change their name.

I might have 3 images in DIR1, 4 in DIR2, 5 in DIR3 and 1 in DIR4. I'd like to select those files, convert them to 256 colors and resize them to 50% of thier original size and put them BACK into thier original directories.

Try to empty whole "Directory" field and change "Overwrite" action to Rename.

Your new names will look like this: image1_1.jpg, image2_1.jpg ..., so if you want rename them, you can use Search (Ctrl+F), type _1.jpg , press Search, View, select all files (Ctrl+A), press F2 and use "Replace/With" option to change _1 to anything you like (but disable "Name template" first).

E.g.: replace [_1 ] / with [ 2] or [ B]...

Yes, outputting files not to one output folder but to their original folder sounds like a useful feature to me. Perhaps something like a radio button
(o) Output all files to: [C:\Temp\My images]
( ) Output to image's folder(s)
would be the right thing (English wording still needs improvement).
