Rotated .jpgs no longer visible

Hello. I have been using XnView Classic on Windows 10 for some time now and have had no issues until now. When reviewing wedding photos I rotated some of the photos and clicked on "save" when prompted...something I've done hundreds of times before. Now, nearly every photo that I rotated is a .jpg icon that will not open, I get "format of the file could not be determined". What can I do? Are those photos lost? Thank you.
