Intermittent error opening PDF files

Trying to migrate from XnView classic to XnView MP 0.92, I'm stumbling with a problem with PDF files. I have the latest Ghostscript installed (9.26) and thumbnails of the PDF's show fine. Double-clicking on a thumbnail for the first time I get "File can't be loaded!" error, but then double-clicking a second (or third, fourth etc) time the file shows normally. Right arrow to the next PDF file works fine. Going back to the file viewer and clicking on a new thumbnail causes the error again.
The PDF files are located on NAS, but the problem still occurs when the files are moved locally.
Problem persists after changing from 64bit XnView MP & Ghostscript to 32 bit versions.
The "ignore read error" option from settings/interface/formats/PDF menu doesn't make a difference.
Same problem experienced with software installed on a different computer.
Most of my PDF files are created by a ScanSnap 1300 scanner, but the problem is experienced with other PDF files as well.
The same PDF files can be opened by XnView classic, Edge & SumatraPDF
Is this a a bug or have I just missed something? I couldn't find it being reported previously.
