Maybe that's just asking too much, but I am very stingy with my screen space and that bar annoys me because it's too cluttered. All I need is sorting (name, date, ascending etc.). Everything else could be hidden far deep in any other part of the GUI I never go into. I know I can hide the bar, but then I miss the sorting tool.

Most of toolbars, tabs ... can be hidden.
Then you can tick "show headers" in View, Sort by ... menu
