how to have more than 2 instances of XnViewMP?

I've been using XnViewMP for a few months. I use it as the default viewer for tif and tiff files, which are mainly what I work with. Yesterday I tried to open a picture by double-clicking it in Windows explorer (which is what I always do), and nothing happened. So I right-clicked it and chose "open with XnViewMP" and still it didn't open.

I found out that it wasn't opening because I already had 2 instances of XnViewMP open; if I closed one of them then I was able to open another picture. But this is new behavior; I've never had a problem opening as many instances as I wanted. Earlier yesterday I had 6 instances open!

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program; no help. I tried checking and un-checking "allow only one instance of XnView" and that didn't help. I've tried opening the program by using the desktop icon and it still will open only 2 instances. How can I get it back to where I can have as many instances as I want?

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x-64 and XnViewMP 0.93 64 bits. (I also tried an earlier version.)
Thanks

I got tired of messing with it and did a system restore to noon yesterday. (Luckily I knew that I had had 6 open before.) Now I can open as many instances as I want.

The system restore dialog didn't show any programs affected by the restore, so I don't know what caused the problem.
