Updating to a new version

Two options for updating are provided. I downloaded the exe file as well as the zipped program folder. I already have 0.93.1 installed. What is the best way to update? The exe or the zipped folder.

If the zipped folder is best, do I just drag it to C:\Program Files\XnViewMP and overwrite what is there?

Thank you.

My own way :
-rename previous directory (0.93) -> xnviewmp.old
-unzip new version (0.94), try it some minutes, and close.
-copy my previous settings : sort files by dates, copy 4,5 or 6 most recent files : xnview.db xnview.ini etc, and paste them into the new directory.
(Edit Nov 20:... Because all my settings were in "program (xnview)" folder. (See : settings integration, paths) )
...and I don't place xnview in Program Files because of Windows' locking behavior.

So my new version gets all the settings i had in previous version.
If some problem occurs in the new version, the previous one is still ready to use ...

When future version (0.95 ?) will be provided, I'll delete the old one (0.93)

Thank you. However, my XnView is installed here: C:\Program Files\XnViewMP so it looks like the preference files you noted are found here C:\Users\Elliott\AppData\Roaming\XnViewMP. It looks like all I needed to do was the rename to OLD, and then copy over the new XnViewMP directory. Is that correct?

What do you mean by Windows locking behavior?

Thanx again.

I think yes

Sometimes, Windows locks "program files" folder for security pupose, and some settings, changes, plugins ... cannot be saved.

My 2 cents on locked files: get unlocker or better yet lockHunter which unlock files and folders from the right click menu
