My simple task is so complicated

Pardon my ignorance but I seem to get more confused as I read the guides and some forum posts.
I have about 5000 jpg photos (and some mp4 videos) on my hard drive, organized in folders by year > month > day
Now, I would like to go through these folders and label (tag, comment, description) some of them for future sorting.
I would like to add these label/tags as I go and keep the key strokes to a minimum without losing my place (so far I've been using drag & drop but it is far from perfect and I keep losing my place...
Can someone please point me in the right direction
