Searching by category, improvement of refinement

(This is a newby writing, so maybe I've done it wrong up till now...)
Say I have categorized many items and now would like to search
for something about a special category.
For that there is the filter pane.
I click on the desired categoryA and la voilĂ : I get my items.
Many items. Very many items. Too many items actually.
So I need a refinement.
That has already been done, as I categorized the items to several categories.
And now ... my point:
I need to know which refinement (by other categories)
exists for my categoryA-filtered items.
How?
The answer is ...
I have to go to the pane set SETS the categories.
(Only) there it will be shown.
With that information I go back to the filter categories
and add a selection for more categories/ refinement.
To summarize:
I have the simple task of FILTERING by category.
For that have to switch to the area of SETTING categories.
And back.
This is not good at all.
And I won't have to tell you that it happened more than once
that I clicked into the setting pane!
Won't make a proposal how to improve.
But it really should.
(To my humble opinion
