Renaming files in XnView using Tools>Batch Rename...

...does the quality or any (other than filename) aspects of the image/file is altered in any way?

Batch Renaming reads the files to determine information for the placeholders. But it does not change the contents of the files in any way. You can rename any file, even non-image files if you want.
