What is "\@\" in the Catalog Directory list?

Under Settings > Catalog > Catalog tab > Catalog maintenance, in the directory list I have a bunch of directories starting with \@\ and \@[directoryname]\... that I didn't add myself. Could anyone tell me what these are and if it's OK to delete them?
My catalog and photos are all on a Samba network share, and I also see entries for the same photo directories starting with the share name (\\NAS\Pictures\...) as well as the same directories listed by the drive letter I have the share mapped to in Windows (P:) (P:\photodirectory\...).
Since I'm accessing the catalog from two different machines, is it better if I use the network share name instead of the mapped drive letter for the "Base path of your pictures"? That will be the same on any computer that accesses it. It seems redundant to have it listing two different ways, plus the mystery "\@\" reference.
