-----------
English, Google search, less than 1 year
xmp "companion file" : 7 answers + 6 xnviewmp answers
xmp "sidecar file" : hundreds
it seems that the most common name is sidecar

Sidecar files, also known as buddy files or connected files, are computer files that store data (often metadata) which is not supported by the format of a source file. (wikipedia)
It is applicable to XMP, pp3, and whatever file type that contains data relative to the main file (processing parameters, additional metadata for raw files...)
A companion file is a file linked to the main file by any other link : exemple raw file and jpg file. Or you need a few files for a certain operation. They are companion files.
