Refresh folder thumbnails [maybe solved]

I often add a first image in my folders, to be used as a thumbnail in the browser view (I use 4 thumbnails for folders, but only the first one is important to me)
A few years ago, I found a way to renew the folders thumbnails, I remember it was tricky, but now I can't do it anymore.
Anyone has an idea ?
thanks

The folder I want to be refreshed is "1962".
Near to the result !
Rename it 1962B
Create a new folder 1962C
Move all photos from 1962B to 1962C
Rename 1962C as 1962
Delete 1962B
But only 1 thumbnail is created instead of 4 (even if option for 4 is enabled)
Many tries, I tried to close/open xnviewmp, tried to "update catalog from files" , tried to create folders out of xnviewmp ...
sometimes no thumbnails are created, sometimes the old version of thumbnails are re-used ...
Later :
An improvement to refresh thumbnails for folders is to delete their parent folder in "Settings Catalog"
When browsing , thumbnails are rebuilt
But I got 1 thumbnail instead of 4 !
In xnview.ini, browser section, the right setting is present: use4Thumb=true
Edit: Found ! I forgot to rename this picture, I used "folder.jpg" and it seems to be the name of a "One Thumbnail Option"
And the name of the chosen photo must be the first in alphabetical order

Solution:
Sort photos by name in folders.
Choose a photo, and give it a name that makes it be the first one . This photo will be the one used for building it's folder's thumbnail
In settings, browser, thumbnails, choose if 1 or 4 photos will be used as thumbnails.
Go to Settings, catalog, select the parent folder and use the "delete" button
Browse again the folder to build new thumbnails
I did not check again if naming a photo : folder.jpg , makes it be the only one to be used as the folder's thumbnail
Edit : checked : yes.

Rebuilding thumbnails. I renemed a set of pictures as 1.2.3.4 yet it still has the ones it had before.
I moved them to a new folder and they would only appear after running refresh thumbnails from the configuration module. Those 4 were the only ones in the folder
There is something not working with all of that but I have no idea of what it might be.

Here is my method:
- "Settings, Custom filter" : in the line "Folders", both options are enabled.
- "Settings, Thumbnails, Misc." Show 4 thumbnails" is enabled
- Menu "View, View as, Thumbnails (+ something)" is selected
- In a folder, rename a photo "1.jpg" and sort the photos by name, so that it is the first one.
- In the parent folder, the thumbnail is not up to date.
- Enter back the folder containing the 1.jpg photo.
- "Settings, Catalog": Select the parent folder in the table and delete it.
- Get out of the folder to display now the parent folder, you can see the thumbnails being rebuilt, don't you ?
