Video playback for avi has sound but no picture

Hello
I am using XnViewMP to categorize my collection of video clips. So far it has done a great job and handled all of the following:
m2ts, mov, mp4, mpg and wmv. However when I try to review some of my avi files I get sound but no picture.
The same avi files play back perfectly in XnView Classic.
In addition I have a small number of different avi files produced by a different camera that repeatedly causes XnViewMP to crash, sometimes just when clicking on the thumbnail, and always when attempting to play preview.
All video formats I have tried produce good thumbnails so there is no issue there.
Having read some of the forum posts, I tried installing the K-Lite Basic Codec pack but that made no difference.
Perhaps I need to adjust some setting?
My setup:
Windows 10 Home with latest update
XnViewMP 0.98.2 (had same problem with 0.98.1)
(I tried attaching a sample video which plays without picture but told file too large.)
