Assign Categories over multiple folders

I go into Folders and choose to show all images recursively. I Click then Ctrl+Click to select images and move down the list - and in doing so, move through a series of folders. When I have clicked a number (who knows, not counting, maybe 40/50/60) I click on the Category in the Categories pane. After a pause, the main view appears to refresh and I discover I am in the folder which contains the last image I selected. I now have to go back to Folders, choose to show all images recursively and scroll down to find the last image I clicked, before continuing. Is this expected behaviour and if so, how to I apply one category to multiple images over multiple folders without working through folder by folder? It is made worse as I do not seem to be able to create a category that lists everything except the subject category. Or is that possible?

I see what you mean and it is not a category issue. If you just show the files in subfolders then start scrolling it will just jump into a folder

I have accumulated a biggish collection of images and not felt the need, until now, to tag them. That means that I have a biggish, untagged collection. As some of my images are easily identified (night shots for example) it seemed to be a quick way to 'list all' then select all night shots by scrolling through and assign a suitable category. I would then view by that category and add any further categories, location for example. But the present XnView behaviour make that really very difficult. And because I can't list by "NOT night" then it becomes a bit hit-and-miss.

I am working on a trial set of several hundred images so I have not yet started the main job. If I can't sort this and a couple of other issues then XnView, for all its strengths, rules itself out.

There are some ways to get around the difficulty ...
- You can add the category "todo" to all your photos. Then if you want to exclude a category in a folder, select "todo" and Alt-click the category

My own method
- Create some categories (Travel, People, Animal, Events, ...) and a sub-category in each one like Travel-todo, People-todo, Animal-todo, Events-todo
- Add one of these sub categories to photos (with "automatically add parent keywords")
- Later, I select Animal-todo, and create categories mammal-todo, Bird-todo, Insect-todo , and add one of these categories to some photos ... etc

So I always know where my job was paused, how many "birds-todo" remains etc ...

* I tried to explain how to start tagging in this page https://orchisere.pagesperso-orange.fr/ ... pintro.htm (French)

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your response and guidance. I have noticed your posts extensively in this group so you are clearly very active and knowledgeable.

What you suggests works - but a little erratically. Initially it's OK but there are times when Alt+Click behaves like Shift+Click and highlights all the categories in between. In the attached image I had selected To Do then started to Alt+Click some places within the Places group. Initially they were excluded then about four exclude-click in, the whole of the category list from To Do to Arundel was also selected as an exclude set. This happens, seemingly, inconsistently - sometimes sooner, sometimes not at all - and so I have not yet discovered any pattern.

[Edit] Now I read again and think ... I had selected To Do then Alt+Clicked Night and was around four Alt+Cliks into the Places when what you see occurred plus Night was de-selected.

I cannot reproduce this behavior with the steps you have mentioned. My view does not refresh after selection of categories for images from multiple folders.
However I have seen the refresh you are describing when I had delete files from a recursive view.
So maybe your issue is a settings thing. Can you try with a fresh instance (portable) of XnvieMP and check if the issue is still present? You can copy the databases thumb.db and xnview.db to your new instance so you have all your categories and thumbnails in there immediately.

Hello,

I've downloaded the portable version and copied the database files over. Initially I could not replicate the problem but I now believe I have a cause. I use a trackball rather than a mouse. I think that if there is a very slight movement on the ball when the Alt and Click are pressed, the unmarked folders become marked. If I am Alt Clicking several, it is easy to click one 'on the move' and highlight all the folders in between. I'll monitor but for now, please put this down to a bug in the liveware.
