how to quickly rate photos?

Hello,
I use Lightroom for years but need something faster to browse/organize large photo collections.
Looks like XnView is fast and doesn't require import.
My question: how to quickly rate photos with stars? I see in the folder view I can right click and there are ctrl+1 ctrl+5 shortkeys to rate, I can also click on star on the left side of photo. When I enter the photo I still see the star in the right top corner of the full screen view but I don't see any button/menu to change it. Is ctrl+1/ctrl+5 only way or can I reconfigure that to 1-5 or enable some buttons to click with the mouse?
General question: is there any documentation available with features description? In help menu I am able to visit website but can't find some kind of user manual or wiki.
