Apologies in advance if I am missing something...

When I am in tab mode and using the arrow to advance through my images and find one I want to come back to there is no way (I can determine) to mark it as a favorite unless I leave the tab and go to the "browser" tab where I have to select the correct thumbnail and then press the favorite button.

Files can be tagged in view (and browse) mode with Ctrl+T.
Back in browse mode, go to View → Filter By → Tagged images.
You can tell XnView when Tagged files list must be cleared in Tools → Options… → Thumbnails → Icon Info.
