Would it be possible to add the ability to rename files using the categories applied to them? I want to be able to organize my photos by tagging them and then having them sorted/grouped in the file system by relation.

not IPTC or XMP categories, but the catalog's categories, right?

Does this idea seem feasible?

Until the "categories" field is available in batch rename, you can select the files with the categories filter and rename them by manually adding the category in the rename field.(or only move files if it's your aim)
You can also do this in two steps, if your files support metadata (like jpg?) : Copy the categories into a metadata, the most relevant being IPTC Keywords, and batch rename with iptc keywords...

For photos, I much prefer a keyword classification rather than a thematic classification in folders.
So I use Tools>Settings>Metadata>Export categories to xmp and iptc keywords to have my categories saved as standard keywords in photos. Other cataloging software recognizes these keywords, but would not be able to retrieve only the categories from XnViewMP.
(if categories are your only tagging method, don't forget to backup them by copying xnview.db file)

If I need to create a folder with photos matching complex criteria, it is easy to do so from keyword filtering, or using batch renaming with iptc keywords...

This is actually for the purpose of organizing illustrated images, not photos. I'm aware that writing to the images' metadata is an option and I'm still considering that, but I'd prefer not to go that route if I can keep it all in the XnView catalog instead.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 0.99.4. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

Hi Pierre, I've tried testing the feature. I can't seem to get it to do anything, though.

It should be in Batch Rename > Name Template > Extra > Categories, right? Or is it something else?

All seems to be correct, but it works here. If you add "{Categories}" in tooltips, is it working?
