XnView Software

Many languages are longer than English, for example a sentence written in German is typically much longer than the same sentence in English.

The result in XnView user interface are sometimes truncated labels. In XnView 1.80 we had quite a number of them. This does not look very nice, so let's try to avoid these in the 1.82 and try to find all the truncated labels.

Sure enough, this cannot be done for Version 1.82 until we have all the language files. But listing the truncated labels in version 1.80 can be done, already. Below a list of the truncated labels that I have found in XnView 1.80 (German):

- Tools > Options, category "Folder tabs"
"Limit Tab caption to"

- "Batch rename" dialog
"Case sensitive" (2 times !)

- "Batch rename" dialog
"Double-click on a file creates a new Name template"

- "Batch rename" dialog
Drop down list "Case sensitiv" -> Shorter German translation if possible.

- "Create Webpages" dialog
"Show information"

- "Create Webpages" dialog
"Maximum size"

- "Create Webpages" dialog
Dropdownlist "Template" (probably all languages)

- "Set DPI" dialog
"Change EXIF DPI if exists"

If you also want to list truncated labels (German or any other language), please name the dialog and label in English.

XnView 1.82

For a few years I worked for software translation company. We did quite a few big projects, like OS/400 and loads of associated software, so I have some experience.

The solution is simple:
Create a workflow that makes possible at least testing translation in live application. Ideally, it would allow also resizing and moving interface elements.

Anyway, regardless of how translation is made, testing it before release is a must. Otherwise you are sure to get into problems, even with so small application like XnView.

Absolutely agreed. Ideally, XnView would use text files as language files, but as we all know this is not the case. So each translator should make sure that he/she gets translation back (as DLL), verifies translations, and checks for truncated labels.

In 1.82 RC2 we have German . Time to check the truncated labels.

Most labels listed above are no longer truncated.

These are still truncated:

- "Batch rename" dialog
"Double-click on a file creates a new Name template"

- "Batch rename" dialog
Drop down list "Case sensitiv" -> Shorter German translation if possible.

And a new ones:

- Batch rename > Duplicate...

Could a German native speaker please verify all dialogs and post here if done? (As far as I know German is one of the "longest" languages, but it might be a good idea to check other languages, too.)

The options -> browser -> "Angezeigte Einträge" dialog looks terrible as well.

Oh yes, that options page looks really messy in German. Perhaps shorter German could be found. But I think Pierre has to work on this one and make columns wider.
